CAJSNA DATA

Area Boards bring decision making into the heart of the community. There are 18 Area Boards across Wiltshire, with each one holding delegated powers and devolved budgets to facilitate community action at a local level. Residents and local organisations are encouraged to engage with their local Area Board by contacting their local Councillor or Strategic Engagement and Partnership Manager or by attending one of the local business meetings, community events, working groups or activities.

Area Boards exist to work alongside other organisations to make things happen in the community. These groups can include town and parish councils, voluntary and community groups, youth organisations, sports clubs and local charities. Area Boards wouldn't be able to achieve what they do without these partners working on the ground with them. The Area Boards host regular business meetings, engagement activities, events, surveys and working groups to stimulate and support local community action.

Area Boards agree local priorities based on local data and intelligence. They discuss the priorities with their local communities and then work hard with local residents and partners to develop projects that will address them.

This section of the Community Area Joint Strategic Needs Assessment provides headline information on population by age and on population change since 2011, in our different Area Boards, as well as information on our Armed Forces personnel. It also hosts Wiltshire's 2021 Census Area Board Population Profile, which provides detailed population data by small age band, as well as a range of other key Census indicators for the local areas.

The CAJSNA information is primarily shown in interactive charts. These allow the user to hover over them and show extra detail within a tooltip, as well as the ability to remove indicators by deselecting them from the legend.

Population

The chart below shows the numbers of people, by broad age band, living in the different community areas, at the time of the 2021 Census.

Definition: Number of people by age band. Census data published at Output Area (OA) level and assigned to Area Board based on the location of the OA's population-weighted centroid.

Population change Expand

Population change since 2011

Wiltshire's total population increased by over 8% between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, while the number of people aged 65 years and over increased by over 30%. The chart below shows the distribution by community area.

Definition: Percentage change in total population, and in population aged 65 years and over, since 2011 Census. Census data published at Output Area (OA) level and assigned to Area Board based on the location of the OA's population-weighted centroid.

Data source and time period: Office for National Statistics, 2021 Census. Table RM121: Sex by age. March 2021. Office for National Statistics, 2011 Census. Table QS103EW: Age by single year. March 2011.

Armed Forces Expand

UK Regular Armed Forces Personnel

Wiltshire has a significant military population that has shaped the county over many years. The chart below shows the number of UK Regular Armed Forces Personnel living in the different Area Boards in January 2023. Reservists, families and veterans also form a vital part of Wiltshire's local communities. Supported by senior military and civilian leaders, Wiltshire Council recently reaffirmed its commitment to the Armed Forces communities by signing the Wiltshire Council Armed Forces Covenant.

There is information on Wiltshire's veterans in the 2021 Census Area Board Population Profile.

Definition: Number of UK Regular Personnel Stationed in Wiltshire by Area Board and Service. UK Regular Army comprises full time service personnel, including Nursing Services, but excluding Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS) personnel, Gurkhas, Mobilised Reservists, Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS), Locally Engaged Personnel (LEP), Non Regular Permanent Staff (NRPS), High Readiness Reserve (HRR) and Expeditionary Forces Institute (EFI) personnel. Includes trained and untrained personnel. The figures are based on service personnel’s stationed location and not their location of residence – where personnel work isn't necessarily where they live. Personnel deployed on operations to an area away from their stationed location are shown against their most recent stationed location. Figures have been rounded to the nearest 10 to prevent inadvertent disclosure. However, numbers ending in "5" have been rounded to the nearest 20 to prevent systematic bias. Totals and constituent numbers have been rounded separately, and so totals may not equal the sums of their rounded parts. Figures below 6 are excluded to prevent possible disclosure.

Data source and time period: Analysis (Tri-Service), Ministry of Defence. FOI2023/09414. Figures are as at 1st January 2023.

2021 Census Area Board Population Profile

This PowerBI report provides information on a range of 2021 Census indicators, most of which have been converted from the small Census Output Area geographies to Area Board level. A small number of Census topics were not released at Output Area level, and these have been included instead at Middle Super Output Area levels, with maps and descriptions to show how these relate to the Area Board geographies.

We are striving to improve our PowerBI dashboards. If there are additional Census metrics that you would like to see included here, or if you have any suggestions for improvement, please get in touch by emailing the Public Health Intelligence Team: intelligence@wiltshire.gov.uk
